Title IX in 2024: From Pregnancy to Transgender Student Athletes CLE
Description of event: Helen “Nellie” Drew, University of Buffalo School of Law, Director, UB Center for the Advancement of Sport, Professor of Practice in Sports Law, will present an overview of 51 years of Title IX. Professor Drew will cover the initial goals of Title IX and the continuing challenges of Title IX. Professor Drew will discuss the Biden Administration’s proposed Title IX Regulations, which are designed to provide protections regardless of gender identity. She will examine the swinging pendulum of Title IX protections over the course of recent presidential administrations. She will also address how Title IX proceedings protect complainants and respondents and the extent to which institutions/schools may have exposure to liability. Professor Drew will cover Title IX issues related to pregnancy, lactations, childcare, paternity, and same sex parents for both students and student athletes. Professor Drew will discuss transgender students and Title IX in K-12 and post-secondary school settings, addressing issues such as gender-affirming care and harassment. Professor Drew will discuss Title IX issues impacting transgender student athletes and she will introduce relevant cases.
